How to Make a Website With Wix: Wix Tutorial for Beginners

If you’re ready to make a website with Wix, then the good news is that you don’t need to know code to do so anymore. That’s the whole point of Wix. 🤩

This tutorial walks you through everything from signing up for an account to hitting publish on your first site. You’ll learn two specific ways to build: Wix AI, which creates a framework of a site for you based on answers to a few questions, and the Wix Editor, which gives you hands-on control over every element.

I’ll cover the practical stuff – setting up your site structure, adding a blog, previewing your work before anyone sees it, and finally making your website live on the web.

By the end of this guide, you’ll have a functioning website. Just follow each step in order, and you’ll get there. The process is simpler than most people expect, and you can complete it in one sitting if you want to.

Create an account with Wix

If you haven’t already, jump over to the Wix website, and click the Get Started button. This is your first step to learn how to make a website with Wix.

You can sign up using all the standard methods. From experience, though, if you think you might like to experiment with multiple free websites, then signing up via email is probably the better method since you can create additional accounts with different emails further down the road.

How to make a website with Wix in 2026

After creating a Wix account, you’ll answer a few setup questions to launch your site.

First off, Wix will ask you if you’re building a site for yourself or if it’s a client project.

In the next step, Wix will ask if you’d like to give their AI builder a go or if you want to build the site by hand. Going with AI is usually the better path for most users, so I’ll cover this path mainly. Click on Start Chat.

It’s best if you try to provide as exhaustive of a site description as you can. This will help Wix propose the right design and site structure so that it’s optimized for your business or project. Here’s what I did:

Wix will have a few followup questions, so answer those, and you’re good to go.

At the very end of your conversation (with AI), Wix will have some suggestions for apps (features) you might want to add to your site to make it more functional for your purpose. Here’s what it has for me:

When all done, Wix will take you to the main dashboard. Here’s mine:

Depending on the elements (apps) you’ve selected in the previous step, you might find different elements there in the center. For instance, you might not see options to set your working hours or set up online payments. Or, you might see more options than me. The point is not to get hang up on those right from the get go and just focus on the basics instead.

Set up domain name

Speaking of basics, you will want to set you site domain name first.

Three possibilities:

• If you already have a domain name, you can bring it over to Wix.
• If you don’t have a domain name, Wix will give you one for free for the first year. Meaning, you can register a domain name through Wix and you won’t have to pay for it for the first year.
• If you don’t have a domain name and also have no clue how to pick one, hop over to DomainWheel. DomainWheel will suggest great name ideas based on your seed keyword. Give it a try.

Note; if you want to use a custom domain name – like yourname.com – then you’ll need to upgrade to one of Wix’s paid plans. The prices start from $17.00 a month.

If you want Wix to register the domain for you:

Just put it in the box and click on Let’s Go. Wix will take you through the steps, take care of all the technicalities and handle the domain registration.

If you already have an existing domain name:

Put it in the box and click on Let’s Go.

In the next step, click on the link that says “Yes, I own this domain.” This will take you through the steps of transferring the domain over.

Set up other site features

Here are some other elements worth setting up when you’re in the dashboard the first time:

(Optional) custom business email.

Wix displays this as one of the main first steps to take when you’re just starting your site for the first time. Whether it is actually required or not is up to you.

Here’s what you need to know:

• By default, there’s no email hosting with Wix – this means that even if you register a domain name with Wix, you will not by default get an email address – for example, like yourname@yoursite.com.
• If you want an email address like that, Wix offers integration with Google Workspace – it’s the pro-level tier of Gmail, basically. That is a paid upgrade on top of what you’re already paying with Wix. Starting at $7.00 per month.
• If you’re already handling your email elsewhere, like via Gmail for example, then you can ignore this upgrade completely.

Set up services.

Most business websites will want to either have a “Products” or “Services” section somewhere.

When you start setting up services via Wix, you will see that the system has already created some example services for you – this was done based on your answer in the onboarding chat. For me, those are:

Those will probably be far off from what you actually want to offer, but that’s great since you can use those existing services as your templates – so just click on any of them and jump in with your modifications.

The Wix interface lets you edit all the details – starting from the basics like name of service, description, etc., but you can also make more specific adjustments based on service type. For example, depending on whether it’s an “appointment,” “class,” or “course,” you will see settings for things like max participants, duration, buffer time, and others.

You also get to pick how you want to be paid for the service: per sessions, with a membership, or a combination of both.

We’re still only scratching the surface here. Wix has lots more options if you’d like to take things further and make it an entire central dashboard for managing your service business … but let’s not get too far ahead with that in this guide.

Set your working hours.

You probably want to let your customers know what your working hours are. Wix lets you set that easily and will then also display that detail on your site in other areas – like service bookings.

Set up your payment methods.

This is going to be useful if you’re planning on collecting payments online.

An important thing here is that Wix itself doesn’t provide online payments. Instead, it lets you connect with third-party services like Stripe or PayPal. Stripe is the easier to work with and also more powerful option, so you’d probably want to go with that. Pick a website design

With the basic settings out of the way, you can now start working on the design of your site. There’s a big button at the top of the Wix interface to get you started.

As with most things these days, you will have an option to use AI in this step:

Picking the option to generate a design with AI will be much faster in most cases, plus Wix will also use the answers you gave in the previous steps during the initial site setup. It’ll start with a brief, generate an initial design, and then let you choose if you want to keep it, regenerate completely, or tweak it just a bit.

Here’s what it gave me in less than a minute:

Let’s say I don’t like it… In that case, I can just click the Regenerate button and get a new design in another minute.

Once you like the general look of the design, but there are some elements not quite there yet, you can click on the Tweak button, and Wix will keep the general look but just modify the individual elements.

When you like what you’re seeing, click on Continue with this Design, and then on Continue to Editor.

Customize your site in the Wix Editor

The Wix Editor is where most of your website customization is going to happen. It’s where you can tweak the design, modify headers and footers, add text, change colors, add new pages, install apps, add media, and much more. I’ll cover it all in this section.

When you first enter the editor, you will see your entire design there:

Click on any element to see the editing possibilities.

For example, clicking on the first content “strip” (it’s what Wix calls your main page sections), gives you options to modify the main layout, element widths, shape dividers, animations, columns, backgrounds, and a lot more.

To get an overview of your editing possibilities, click on each of the elements to discover their unique design and layout choices. For example:

• Text blocks have options to switch heading and font sizes, add effects, and more.
• With forms, you can change designs, layouts and the number of fields.
• Larger sections usually have controls for element widths, column layouts, and more.

Any change is displayed in real-time. Not happy? Hit the Undo arrow and it’s like it never happened.

Editing the individual elements will add a little sparkle to your site, but to learn how to edit a Wix website for global changes, you will need to use the menu on the left-hand side:

Add content elements to your Wix site

To add website elements that aren’t included in the template, click the Add Elements (“+” symbol) button.

Everything you need for a website will be here including:

• Galleries and images
• Interactive slideshows
• Videos and music
• Buttons
• Forms
• Text
• Menus and anchors
• Social media elements
• Blog

For example, let’s see how to add a hamburger menu to our site, which will make it easier to use on mobile. Click Add Elements “+” → Menu & Anchor → Hamburger Menus. Then, just drag and drop the menu you like to the corner of your page.

Adding basic sections like new text blocks or headings works the same way. Just click Add Elements “+” → Text, and pick the right kind of text from the list there. Similarly, just drag and drop it into place.

You can add any other content element exactly the same way – click on the plus icon, look through the list and then drag and drop your desired element into place.

But the great thing is that you don’t have to work element by element! You can add entire sections.

Use Wix page sections

Right below that plus icon, you will find the next option – Add Section.

These pre-made sections include tons of neat designs and functional blocks that most people usually want to have on their sites. I’m talking things like welcome sections, about, contact, team, services, newsletter subscribe, testimonials, and more.

If you want to add any of them to your site, again, just pick one you like and then drag and drop it onto your page design. I’m going to add a testimonials block to mine.

Set up menus and new pages

For changes to your site structure, it’s easiest to add Wix pages through the Site Pages and Menu option (the icon looks like a green document). Once selected, it gives you an overview of your menus, pages, and their visibility in the main menu.

You will see some elements in there already. The exact set will depend on your current design, of course, plus on what Wix thought might be useful for your site and business.

When you’re ready to add a Wix page, click the Add Page button to open the page selection menu. Again, you will see tons of options for the most common page types, such as about pages, contact, projects, landing pages (for promotions), plus also functional pages like store, bookings, and more. Simply roll over the design you like and click Add page.

Once the page appears in the main menu, you can manage basic SEO settings, add social share images, or change the title.

Finally, you can also remove the page from the menu, rename it, or duplicate it.

Work with the theme manager

The theme manager is for changing color schemes and font options. Let’s look at them individually.

Color

When learning how to create a Wix website, color palettes present the biggest challenge. Fortunately, Wix provides a few “designer approved” palettes to ease you into the process.

Click on Site Design (orange icon with the letter A + droplet) → Change Theme.

This reveals your current color scheme, along with other recommended colors from Wix. Clicking each palette gives you a preview.

If you like the new color scheme, click on the Save button. If not, select the original scheme to revert back.

To edit the colors, click Color theme in the main Site Design panel (second image above), and then use any color drop to open the color picker.

For minor adjustments, click the small colored boxes to open the Adjust Shade box.

Once again, you’ll see a preview of the changes. If you’re happy, click Apply to make the change. Otherwise, close the box to cancel any changes.

Text

Of course, you’d expect that you should be able to adjust any piece of text you see on any page – and you’d be correct.

Go to Site Design → Text theme.

In here, you can change the fonts, styles, sizes, and colors.

For example, Heading 1 is the main heading on every page. If you change this font, you’ll change all H1s across your site.

To scroll through the available fonts on Wix, click the small pencil → down arrow to open the Wix fonts list.

All the best Wix fonts are here, but if you want to add more fonts, click the Upload Fonts button. You can add TTF, OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 fonts to Wix in a few seconds.

Page background

Most users will probably want to adjust their backgrounds. After all, swapping the background is an easy way to make your design feel completely different. Wix allows you to use full-color backgrounds, images, videos, or even generate custom backgrounds with AI.

Go to Site Design → Page background.

Install Wix apps

Now for the exciting part in this tutorial: adding more features with apps and integrations. With over 300 paid and free apps, the Wix App Market is an easy way to enhance your website. Go to the App Market by clicking Add Apps (a pink icon with four squares).

Finding an app couldn’t be easier. Search according to function, or browse through popular options and categories.

For example:

• If you want to add some optimized social media icons or social media feeds to your site, Wix has apps that handle each of these areas specifically.
• Same for things like store locators – you can integrate your site with Google Maps pretty easily.
• Wix also has apps to help you run a blog on your Wix site, manage bookings, or even sell event tickets.

There are also general categories to guide your search, like:

• Marketing
• Selling online
• Services and events
• Media
• Design
• Communication
• Collecting leads
• Traffic analysis

While you might be impressed with the number and variety of apps, wait till you see how easy they are to install and use. There’s actually no need to have a Wix tutorial for it, just click on Add to Site. Wix handles the rest.

Add more media

No matter what type of website you’re building, you’ll rely on media elements to catch the eye and keep people engaged. Managing these elements, making adjustments to them, and storing them is handled through the Wix Media Center.

Click on Media (orange image icon) to search for free images from Wix, edit video and images, and upload media from your computer, Facebook, Google Drive, and more.

Whether uploading a photo or selecting one from your Wix site, it’s always possible to click the Photo Studio button to crop, resize, enhance, overlay, and edit just about every aspect of the photo.

Set up Wix business features

Depending on the modules you’ve enabled on your site, you might see an additional section in the Wix sidebar – called My Business (dark blue icon with two squares and a gear).

This is where you can set up the details of your appointment booking options, blog, site search, services, and much more. Overall, it’s great that you can find all of those features in a single panel.

Speaking of blog…

Create a blog on Wix

If you’re interested in content marketing, this is the part of the Wix tutorial you’ve been waiting for. We’re going to add a blog to our Wix website. To do so, go to Add Elements “+” → Blog. This installs the Wix Blog app, and you can drag and drop your blog listing to your current page design.

With the app installed, you can now access your Wix Blog section by going to the My Business menu item.

From there, you can create and manage an entire archive of posts. Let’s add a blog post now:

Creating a blog post with Wix

In the Wix Blog portion of the My Business section, click on Write Post or Create Post; they both send you to the same place.

The text editor looks like every other text editor on the planet. Everything you need to format text, like bold, colors, lists, and alignment, can be found along the top of the screen.

On the left, you’ve got options for managing your posts with settings, SEO, categories, and tags. The “+” button inside the content lets you quickly add design elements like images, galleries, lists, and buttons.

If you need to make changes to the cover image, author, or publication date, open the Settings options. There are also tabs to monetize and translate your Wix blog in the left-side menu.

The final step is to click the Publish button to share your content with the world.

Managing your Wix blog posts

Click on Manage Blog to open the Posts section of the main Wix dashboard. This is the place to control blog settings for categories, tags, SEO, and reader notifications.

You can even hire a writer from this screen or import posts from other platforms. Once you have an archive of published content, you will also find detailed analytics through this dashboard.

Preview and publish your site

Once you’re done customizing your site, you should still do a couple of things before showing it to the world.

First, preview your final work. There’s a “preview” link in the top right corner of the interface. When you click it, Wix will generate the final version of the site – enable all the animations, set all the colors, etc. – and show it to you exactly as your visitors will see it.

To make sure everything is correct, switch between the desktop and mobile views – there are buttons right next to the Wix logo in top left:

If anything is off, just click on the link that says Back to Editor.

If all is okay, you can click on the main Publish button. Wix will notify you if all went well, show you the address of your site and also point out any steps you’ve missed if any.

Note; In most cases, what you’re missing is a custom domain name. By default, Wix publishes your site on the Wix subdomain. The structure of your website’s address is something like this: https://USERNAME.wixsite.com/SITE-NAME
