How to change password WordPress

Struggling with how to change your password in WordPress?

In this beginner-friendly guide, we’ll show you step-by-step how to change your WordPress password whether or not you can still access your WordPress dashboard.

If you do have access to your WordPress dashboard, changing your password (or the password for another user account) is super-simple. And if you’re locked out of your dashboard, don’t worry! You can still change your password in another way (and we have a detailed guide to help you do it).

Here’s everything that we’ll cover in this guide:

You can click the links above to jump straight to a specific section or keep reading for all the ways how to change password in WordPress.

How to change password in WordPress from inside the WordPress dashboard

Here’s how to change your own WordPress password from inside the WordPress dashboard.

First, open your “edit profile” page by going to Users → Profile inside your WordPress dashboard:

Open WordPress profile

Scroll down to the Account Management section at the bottom. Next to New Password, click on the Set New Password button:

WordPress will now automatically generate a strong password for you. If you want to use a different password, you can click and type in the box to override the generated password.

If you do override the automatically-generated password, make sure to use a strong password to protect your site from brute force attacks.

Once you’ve entered the password that you want to use and saved it in a safe spot (like a password manager), make sure to click the Update Profile button at the bottom to save your new password:

Enter new WordPress password

And that’s it! Your password is officially changed. Make sure to use your new password the next time you log in to WordPress.

How to change someone else’s password in WordPress from inside the WordPress dashboard

Above, we showed you how to change your own password. But you might also have situations in which you need to change another user’s password.

As long as you’re the admin for your WordPress site, this is almost as simple as changing your own password.

To get started, go to the Users area in your WordPress dashboard. Then, hover over the user whose password you want to change and click the Edit option:

Edit another user's profile

Next, scroll down to the Account Management area and click the Set New Password button:

WordPress will automatically generate a strong password. If you want to override that password, just click in the box and type your desired password:

Enter the new password

When you’ve entered the new password, make sure to click the Update User button to save the new password.

Also make sure to send the new password to the user because they’ll need to use it the next time they log in to WordPress.

How to manually change WordPress password if you’re locked out of the dashboard

If you can’t access your WordPress dashboard, you can still change your password, but the process is a little more complicated.

Before you jump into that process, though, I recommend you try using the built-in WordPress password reset feature, which you can access from the WordPress login page:

How to use the WordPress password reset feature to change password

This feature will send a reset link to your account’s email address. Once you click the link in that email, you’ll be able to enter a new password to use.

However, if you can’t use that password reset feature for some reason, you’ll need to go with one of the manual methods. Click the link below to go to our full guide on how to manually reset your WordPress password:

Final thoughts

If you can still access your WordPress dashboard, WordPress makes it easy to change your own password or another user’s password by editing your profile.

And if you’re locked out of your dashboard for some reason, you can still manually change your password to regain access, even if the built-in WordPress password reset feature isn’t working.

Either way, make sure to use a strong password to protect your site from malicious actors, along with implementing other WordPress security tips.
