Otter Blocks vs GenerateBlocks
GenerateBlocks is a deliberately small set of primitives with a serious styling engine behind it. Otter takes a different view: the features a site needs to collect leads and control who sees what belong in the free plugin, not behind a licence.
Free forever on WordPress.org. Otter Pro from $69 a year with a 30 day money back guarantee.
Free in Otter, paid in GenerateBlocks
What is free in Otter, and what it costs in GenerateBlocks
GenerateBlocks Pro added forms, popups and conditions across 2025 and 2026, so the gap is no longer about what exists. It is about which side of the paywall each one sits on.
Two of those rows are closer than they look. Their conditions system is well built and their forms cover the common cases. The difference is that you need the licence before you can reach either one.
What you get without paying anything
Both lists are the free download, with nothing bought. Block counts are what each plugin actually puts in the block inserter.
Otter Blocks, free
26+ blocksGenerateBlocks, free
12 blocksGenerateBlocks is minimal on purpose. Whether twelve primitives or a wider ready made set suits you better depends on how much you want to build by hand.
Where each feature actually lives
Read this as a map of paywalls rather than a scoreboard. Rows where GenerateBlocks is ahead are marked too.
Four reasons to choose Otter Blocks
A form that keeps everything, for free
Otter writes every valid submission to your database with no ceiling, and lists them under Otter Blocks in wp-admin. GenerateBlocks forms need Pro, are off until you enable the module, keep a maximum of 500 submissions and delete anything older than 180 days. Their own documentation calls that storage a safety net rather than a record.
The mailing list is not an upsell
Connect a form to Mailchimp or Brevo on the free Otter plugin. In GenerateBlocks every email integration is Pro, because the form itself is Pro.
Conditional content starts free and goes further
Otter gives you eight visibility conditions in the free plugin, and Otter Pro takes that past twenty, adding post meta, query strings, country, cookies, date and time ranges, Stripe purchase history, seven WooCommerce rules and LearnDash course status. GenerateBlocks has none in free and twelve with Pro.
Per block CSS in the free plugin
Otter puts a custom CSS field on every block in the free version. GenerateBlocks moves CSS editing into Pro, and the free plugin switches off the core Additional CSS field on its own blocks, so there is no fallback without a filter.
What each side costs
Otter Pro
Priced on how many sites you run. Introductory pricing, renewals at full price.
GenerateBlocks Pro
One tier, sold on generatepress.com. The theme is a separate purchase.
How to read those numbers
If you run dozens of sites, GenerateBlocks Pro is cheaper per site than anything we sell, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. The question is what the licence buys. With Otter, forms with stored submissions, popups and conditional content are in the free download, so a single site can go live without paying at all. With GenerateBlocks all three sit behind the $99 licence, and WooCommerce blocks are not available at any price yet. On the theme side GenerateBlocks pairs with GeneratePress Premium at $59 a year, while ThemeIsle publishes Neve, whose drag and drop header and footer builder is free.
Moving from GenerateBlocks to Otter
You do not have to rebuild the site in a weekend. Both plugins can run at the same time while you move page by page.
Install Otter alongside GenerateBlocks
Otter registers its own blocks and leaves existing GenerateBlocks markup alone. Nothing on your live pages changes.
Start with the things you were about to pay for
A contact form, a popup, a section that should only show to logged in users. All three are in the free Otter plugin, so this is the step that saves money immediately.
Rebuild layout sections as you touch them
GenerateBlocks containers and grids map onto Otter sections and columns. There is no need to rush pages that already look right.
Keep GenerateBlocks until nothing depends on it
Its blocks stop rendering if you deactivate it, so leave it installed while any page still uses one. Once a page is fully on Otter, clearing out the leftovers removes a second set of assets from the front end.
When GenerateBlocks is the better pick
Three cases where we would point you at GenerateBlocks instead.
Common questions
Is Otter Blocks actually free?
Yes. Otter Blocks is on WordPress.org and the free plugin includes forms with stored submissions, Mailchimp and Brevo, eight visibility conditions, the Popup block, per block custom CSS and the AI tools. Otter Pro adds the WooCommerce builder, dynamic content, the autoresponder, file upload and Stripe form fields, and CSV export of submissions.
Does GenerateBlocks have forms now?
Yes, since GenerateBlocks Pro 2.6 in June 2026. They are a Pro feature, off by default until you enable the forms module, and they cover contact and email signup with a good set of field types and integrations. Their submission storage is capped at 500 entries and anything older than 180 days is removed automatically, which their documentation describes as a safety net rather than a record.
Is GenerateBlocks the same thing as GeneratePress?
No, and it is the most common mix up. GeneratePress is a theme and GeneratePress Premium is its paid plugin at $59 a year. GenerateBlocks is a separate blocks plugin and GenerateBlocks Pro is $99 a year. Features like the theme Elements module and WooCommerce support belong to the theme side, not the blocks plugin.
Can I run Otter and GenerateBlocks together?
Yes. They register separate blocks and do not conflict, which is the easiest way to migrate or to fill a gap. Two block libraries do load two sets of assets, so it is worth removing the one you stop using once a page no longer needs it.
Does Otter store form submissions without Pro?
Yes. Otter writes every valid submission to your WordPress database in both the free and Pro versions, with no cap and no automatic deletion, and any administrator can read them under Otter Blocks in wp-admin. Exporting them as CSV or XML is the part that needs Otter Pro.
What happens to my site if I let Otter Pro lapse?
Your pages keep rendering. You stop receiving Pro updates and support until you renew. Otter Pro is introductory priced, so renewals are at the full list price shown on the pricing page.
How we checked this
Verified August 2026 against primary sources: the WordPress.org listings for otter-blocks and generateblocks; the GenerateBlocks Pro product page and pricing page; their release posts for Forms in Pro 2.6, Overlay Panels and Conditions in Pro 2.3 and GenerateBlocks 2.0; their WooCommerce roadmap post; and documentation for conditions, forms, global styles and the pattern library. Otter figures come from the Otter Pro pricing page and Otter documentation. Capabilities and prices change often, so tell us if you spot something stale and we will correct it.
Try the free plugin before you compare licences
Install Otter Blocks, build one form, store one submission and add a popup. That is the whole argument, and it costs nothing to test.
