It\u2019s been four years since Google\u2019s Apps for Work became G Suite. Since then, the platform has risen in popularity, and today more than six million businesses [1]<\/sup> rely on its online productivity and collaboration tools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as of October 2020, the G Suite brand is no more as Google has officially announced that G Suite has become Google Workspace<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n

Providing a more seamless user experience (UX) can boost productivity<\/a>. According to Demystifying the desktop, an employee typically switches between 35 job-critical applications over 1,100 times a day [2]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of those lost seconds add up. Studies suggest that an employee wastes up to 60 minutes every day navigating between apps [3]<\/sup>. This means that your business could be losing 32 days per employee, per year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By combining multiple apps into a more seamless user interface (UI), solutions such as Google Workspace could potentially save your business a significant amount of time. Workspace also appears to be focusing on remote teamwork and collaboration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the current climate, rebranding G Suite as a complete remote working solution makes sense. Both Google and Facebook have informed staff that they won\u2019t be returning to the office until July 2021 at the earliest [4]<\/sup>. What Google Workspace means for G Suite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you have a G Suite subscription, then you should have already received an email from Google<\/a> detailing the impact this change will have on your particular organization. Typically, this seems to involve migrating customers to Google Workspace as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you\u2019re on an annual or fixed term plan, then your G Suite subscription will continue until your renewal date. G Suite Enterprise customers will also be automatically migrated to the new Google Workspace Enterprise Plus<\/a> plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of writing, none of G Suite\u2019s applications were being retired. However, the familiar tools are getting colorful new icons: <\/p>\n\n\n

New features in Google Workspace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Workspace is more than just a rebranding exercise. Google has already announced some new features for the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Workspace, Google aims to combine multiple communication methods into a single interface. It seems this concept is going to be expanded in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google Workspace will see Meet, Chat, and Rooms more tightly integrated with its other apps. This is good news for anyone who\u2019s constantly switching between email, instant messaging, voice, and video calls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other upcoming features include the ability to create documents directly within Chat. Users can then collaborate on these documents inside the Chat room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Google, Workspace users will also be able to preview linked files in Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This makes it possible to collaborate on a document without having to open it in a new tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To provide more seamless communication, you can also view contact details inside Workspace documents. Whenever you @ someone in a document, Workspace will launch a smart chip<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This popup will display the user\u2019s contact information, plus useful suggestions such as start a video call,<\/em> or send an email. <\/em>This includes contacts who are outside your organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2020, Google announced its intention to bring Meet picture-in-picture to Gmail and Chat<\/a>. This enables you to see and hear the people you\u2019re collaborating with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the coming months, Google has also announced that it\u2019s rolling out Meet\u2019s picture-in-picture to Workspace\u2019s Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This is another useful change for businesses that are using the platform to collaborate remotely. <\/p>\n\n\n

Google Workspace vs G Suite pricing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to pricing, Google Workspace<\/a> follows a similar model to G Suite. The cheapest plan, Business Starter<\/a>, is $7.00 per month. Customers who require more storage and support for larger meetings can opt for the Business Standard<\/a> plan, which comes in at $14 per user per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This places Google Workspace at a similar price point as competing remote working solutions, particularly Microsoft 365<\/a>. Microsoft offers a Business Basic tier<\/a> priced at $5 per user per month, and a Business Standard<\/a> plan for $12.50 per user per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Google Workspace does introduce a new payment tier. The Workspace Business Plus<\/a> plan is priced at $22 per user per month. It includes various upgrades over the Standard plan, including enhanced security, more storage, and an increase in the maximum number of participants per meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, this is comparable to other popular remote working solutions. In particular, Microsoft offers a Business Premium<\/a> tier, priced at $20 per user per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
