Fifteen years ago, I launched my very first blog. It curated the best jokes from around the web. While the jokes got me traffic, I didn’t manage to make a lot of money with that site. I know, I was just as shocked as you are.
This experience taught me the importance of finding a profitable niche. Thus, twelve years later, we launched FinMasters.com in the personal finance niche, where NerdWallet had just IPOed, being valued at around $1B – a seemingly perfect choice. However, we had little to no expertise in most finance topics, with only some knowledge of investing. Despite our efforts to recruit the best writers, we’ve so far lost around $700,000 on the project, read more here and here.
From these endeavors, I’ve learned valuable lessons about the importance of choosing a niche that is not only profitable but also within your area of expertise and authority.
We did just that with the blog you’re currently reading, we started as a web agency building WordPress websites, and then we transitioned to creating plugins and themes. So we had the expertise, the authority, and the money to launch a blog about websites and blogging. And it worked, we’re generating five figures monthly from affiliate revenue, on top of product sales.

For those interested in more detailed data on smaller, specific niches, I recommend reading those two surveys Productive Blogging or the RankIQ study.
1. Digital marketing
It’s difficult to overestimate the importance of digital marketing in today’s business world, even when it comes to small businesses. The industry is projected to reach a value of 807.92 billion dollars by 2028 [1].
Digital marketing covers a broad range of strategies, from search engine optimization (SEO) and email campaigns to social media and influencer marketing. As the ecommerce world continues to grow, more online businesses are seeking the expertise of marketers to help them reach new customers, boost their conversion rates, and turn them into blog income.
Whether you have a business degree or consider yourself social media savvy, digital marketing offers a lot of potential. You can narrow down your focus into a micro-niche, such as affiliate marketing or social media management, and turn your blog into a valuable resource regarding a variety of different topics.
For instance, a popular blogger and marketer, Neil Patel, runs a blog about the latest trends and hacks in digital marketing:
If you decide to monetize your blog with affiliate programs, you’ll find plenty of relevant products and services to promote. This includes marketing tools, such as SEO plugins and email lists and platforms.
2. Tech and AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) originated in the 1950s as a scientific discipline. However, the rise of AI-like tools such as ChatGPT in recent years has started to affect the daily lives of professionals and creatives across various industries.
The global AI market size is projected to reach 407 billion dollars by 2027 [2]. Meanwhile, 35 percent of companies are already using AI in their operations. The majority of users include professionals in IT, marketing, customer service, web development, and data engineering [3].
All of this makes AI one of the most profitable blog niches today. If you have a keen interest in AI, you can blog about this evolving technology. You might even pair this interest with your professional background.
For example, if you’re a web developer or a marketing professional, you can show readers how to use AI in their projects or campaigns:
You could even target business owners, and help them automate tasks and save money with AI.
When it comes to monetization, you might consider recommending AI tools with affiliate programs. These can include content generators, as well as SEO tools like Anyword and GetGenie.
Alternatively, you might create a tech blog that focuses on emerging AI tools and trends. You could partner with brands on product reviews and sponsorships to make money from your content.
3. Blogging and making money online
Blogging has become so popular in recent years that there’s actually a large blog niche dedicated to helping people break into this industry. There are over 600 million blogs on the internet, and over 7.5 million posts are published per day [4].
You’ll also find plenty of blogs that help people make money online. This can involve anything from blogging and freelance writing to working as a virtual assistant or starting your own online business.
For example, blogger Melyssa Griffin helps fellow bloggers and entrepreneurs grow their online businesses:
If you’ve been blogging for a while now, this is one profitable niche you can explore. In recent years, bloggers and influencers have come to play an important role in the digital marketing world. In fact, the global market value of influencer marketing reached 21.1 billion dollars in 2023 [5].
With more people exploring blogging as a source of income, you can share your expert tips and advice to help them succeed. You could show them how to write content that converts or drive traffic from social media channels such as Pinterest.
When it comes to monetizing your content, you can start by promoting affiliate products, such as writing courses or SEO tools that can help people grow their blogs. You may even want to consider launching your own blogging course or hosting paid webinars.
4. Health and fitness
Online fitness classes have become increasingly popular in the last few years. The market size grew from 15.7 billion dollars in 2022 to 21.8 billion dollars in 2023. Additionally, it is expected to grow to $76.6 billion by 2027 [6].
If you’re a health professional, you can take advantage of this growing trend by starting your own fitness blog. Thanks to the nature of this industry, you’re not restricted to only writing blog posts. In fact, you can create all sorts of content, from workout videos to fitness courses, and one-on-one training sessions or tutorials on proper technique.
For instance, the fitness site Love Sweat Fitness contains everything from blog posts and workout videos to an app that helps you stay in shape:
This industry presents plenty of opportunities to make money, which is why it’s one of the most profitable blog niches. You can work with brands to promote products, such as fitness equipment and clothing. You might even offer an online health program or sell a subscription to your workout videos.
5. Personal finance and investing
People are always looking for ways to manage their money more effectively. This is reflected by the average cost of Google Ads in the finance and insurance industry, which currently stands at around $3.44 per click. Additionally, finance ads have a conversion rate of about 5.10 percent [7].
Personal finance can therefore be a lucrative blogging niche. As a financial advisor, you can help people manage their money wisely, whether by saving for retirement or making the right investments.
For example, the finance blog Making Sense of Cents offers a wealth of tips and advice, from saving money to paying off loans:
The FIRE niche (Financial Independence, Retire Early) has also been very popular and will continue to be in 2024 and beyond, with lots of blogs focused on helping people plan and achieve FIRE.
However, if you’re helping people save money and spend responsibly, you may be wondering how you can convince them to make purchases through your blog. The trick is to sell something that can help them make more money in the long run.
In other words, you’ll need to present your product as an investment. For example, you can create an online course on your WordPress blog to help people master the stock market. You could even host webinars or give individual financial advice.
6. Recipes and food
Food is an evergreen topic and one of the most profitable blog niches. It also offers various sub-niches to explore, from quick and easy meals to information on specific diets.
One food topic that has become increasingly popular in recent years is home cooking. In fact, research shows that 55 percent of consumers are increasing their home cooking efforts, since eating out has become more expensive due to inflation [8].
The food niche is very saturated. You’ll find hundreds of blogs offering recipes, meal plans, product reviews, and diet advice:
However, this doesn’t mean it’s difficult to break into the market of food bloggers. You’ll just need to get a bit creative, especially if it’s your first blog, such as by putting your own twist on popular dishes or sharing innovative recipes.
Given the visual nature of this topic, you may want to pair your food blog with an image-centric platform, such as Instagram or Pinterest. The latter is a popular resource for recipes:
When it comes to monetization, there are various options you can explore. For example, you can partner with food brands and create recipes using their products. If you want to earn a passive income through your blog, you could sell your own printable cookbooks or give live-streamed cooking classes.

7. Personal development and self-care
Self-care has become a popular trend in recent years. A survey conducted in 2023 found that 90 percent of young Americans were using self-care methods for managing their mental health and emotions [9]. These include activities such as journaling, meditation, and viewing inspirational content on social media.
If you’re a trained psychologist, a wellness coach, or counselor, you may want to consider delving into the self-care industry. There are a variety of topics you can write about, from morning routines and stress management to mindfulness techniques and journaling:
As a self-care blogger, you can monetize your content by promoting products that can help readers achieve their goals. Additionally, you can offer life-coaching sessions, podcasts on mental health or self-improvement, and digital products (such as journals) via your blog.
